COLOUR AND SPACE ILLUSIONS

Using dark and light tones can affect the feeling of space in a room. This is best illustrated in the captioned diagrams below:

pic-1To make a room feel larger, decorate in light colours, as light is then reflected.

pic-2To bring the walls in and the ceiling down, use warm colours.

pic-3Dark and warm colours advance. A wall painted in a dark colour is drawn in.

pic-4Cool colours recede. A wall painted in a cool colour appears further away.

pic-5A dark floor covering makes the floor seem smaller and draws the eye downward.

pic-6To lower a ceiling use a colour which is slightly darker than the walls.

pic-7To raise a ceiling use a colour which is lighter than the walls.

pic-8To lower a ceiling in a large room paint the top section of the walls to match.

pic-9To widen a corridor use a very light colour on the walls.

pic-10To shorten a corridor, paint the wall at the end in a dark colour.

pic-11To alter the proportions of a corridor, decorate the ceilings and the floor in a dark colour.
